Submitting art, poetry and prose to Kansas City Review is free. If you are able, you can also help us stay afloat by submitting via our Tip Jar! Just upload your work and be sure that you’ve followed the submission guidelines (found below for each category). We are now limited in the number of free submissions we can provide per month. The Tip Jar form allows those who are able to chip in $5 and let someone in greater need take the next free submission. Note: Tip Jar and Free submissions will be considered in exactly the same manner. Tip Jar submissions will not receive faster turnaround on decisions or any special consideration. Note: If this form is inactive, you can either wait for the next month to begin and submit at that time or choose the Tip Jar option.
General instructions:
NEW THIS YEAR–We are using separate submissions forms for our three categories: Art, Poetry, and Prose. We are continuing to offer free submissions and Tip Jar submissions, so there are six forms to choose from.
ALSO NEW THIS YEAR–We are requesting author bios up front as part of the initial submission. There will be a Contributor Biography / Contact Info field in the submission form. Please write a 50-word bio in the third person and provide your contact info there.
Art: We love art any way we can get it! We've been lucky enough to showcase photography, oil painting, watercolor, digital, fiber pieces, and sculpture. We like it in color OR black & white. We appreciate art in its native unaltered state or with digital enhancement and/or manipulation. Accepted pieces are printed on heavy stock, glossy paper in full page 8.5 x 11 spreads (whenever possible), and each piece is allotted one page. Payment for each published piece of art will be one copy of the magazine. Cover artist receives two contributor copies. We accept up to three art submissions per artist. For multiple submissions complete three separate submission forms, as each submission allows only one attachment. Please submit as a PDF, JPEG, or PNG file in at least 300 dpi.
Poetry: We like poetry with a strong voice that makes us feel something. We don't care if it's free verse, a haiku, a cinquain, a ballad, or any other form--we want to read it all. We accept up to three poems per poet. For multiple submissions you need to complete three separate submission forms; each submission allows only one attachment. Please utilize standard fonts. Payment for each published poem will be one copy of the magazine.
Prose: We like engaging, polished prose that tells a complete story with a distinct voice. We're open to fiction or non-fiction in all genres. Show us you have the skill to pull off a flash fiction piece with a definitive beginning, middle, and end. Help readers see non-fiction in a new light by sending us your creative non-fiction works. Give us the short story you pulled off beautifully, something you thought you couldn't get away with. Our only form restriction is to keep it to 5,000 words or less. We accept up to three prose submissions per author. For multiple submissions you need to complete separate submission forms for each piece; each submission allows only one attachment. In the attachment, include the piece's word count in the upper right-hand corner, double space with standard fonts. Payment for each published prose piece will be one copy of the magazine.
