This is the Free Submission form! Just upload your work and be sure that you’ve followed the submission guidelines (found below for each category). We will reach out to you when a decision is made.

KC Voices Youth has traditionally and will continue to offer free submissions. However, Submittable limits the number of free submissions per month. If you wish to support our efforts to foster literature and art in Kansas City, you have the option of submitting via the Tip Jar form. The Tip Jar form allows those who are able to chip in $5 and let someone in greater need take the next free submission.

Note: Tip Jar and Free submissions will be considered in exactly the same manner. Tip Jar submissions will not receive faster turnaround on decisions or any special consideration.

Note: If this form is inactive, you can either wait for the next month to begin and submit at that time or choose the Tip Jar option.

General instructions

KC Voices Youth is a publication of work by high school students, ages 13 to 19, in Kansas City and surrounding communities (approx. 75 mi. radius). For those who don’t meet these criteria, please check in with us this winter. All are welcome to submit to Volume 19 of our longstanding journal Kansas City Voices, which will open for submissions in January 2023.

Include your category in the Description field: To help us sort the work, please include the category in the DESCRIPTION field (i.e., Prose: word count up to 4,000 words; Poetry: line count up to 50 lines, or Art: medium and dimensions).

Remove names: Our submissions process is blind. We only accept attachments with no identifying information. Please make sure the writer's/artist's name is not included in the TITLE field or the FILE NAME (i.e. john smith art submission.jpg, etc.). Standard artist signature incorporated onto the canvas/image of art is understood to be part of the art piece and will not be disqualified.

Please find instructions specific to your category below.

Art

We love art any way we can get it! We've been lucky enough to showcase photography, oil painting, watercolor, fabric pieces, and sculpture in past issues. We're open to any media you can throw our way, even comics. We like it in color OR black & white. We appreciate art in its native unaltered state or with digital enhancement and/or manipulation.

Accepted pieces are printed on heavy stock, glossy paper in full page 8.5 x 11 spreads (whenever possible), and each piece is allotted one page.

We accept up to three (3) art submissions per artist. For multiple submissions complete separate submission forms, as each submission allows only one attachment.

Uploads are limited to 400 MB per file. You may use a low-resolution file for submission and send a high-resolution image upon acceptance. All accepted images should have resolution of 300 dpi or higher.

Poetry

We love a good poem with a strong voice. A poem that makes us feel something.

We don't care if it's free verse, a haiku, a cinquain, a ballad, or any other form--we want to read it all.

Our only restriction is to keep it to 50 lines or less. We accept up to three (3) poems per poet. For multiple submissions you need to complete separate submission forms, as each submission allows only one attachment.

Our submissions process is blind. We only accept attachments with no identifying information. Please make sure the poet's name is not included in the TITLE field or the FILE NAME (i.e. john_smith_poem.docx, etc.) or anywhere on the attachment you upload. In the attachment, include the line count in the upper right hand corner. Please utilize standard fonts.

Prose

We love engaging, polished prose that tells a complete story with a distinct voice. Tell your story. We'll listen.

We're open to fiction or non-fiction in all genres. Show us you have the skill to pull off a flash fiction piece with a definitive beginning, middle, and end. Help readers see non-fiction in a new light by sending us your creative non-fiction works. Give us the short story you pulled off beautifully, something you thought you couldn't get away with.

Our only form restriction is to keep it to 4,000 words or less. We accept up to two (2) prose submissions per author. For multiple submissions you need to complete separate submission forms, as each submission allows only one attachment.
